Well, the time has come to finally tackle that closet that has been about to tackle you every time you open it! Organizing your Linen Closet is one of those things about adulting that actually doesn’t have to totally suck. Here are some easy ideas to get you started…
Where to start your Organizing process
A lot of people have a strong desire to get organized but knowing where to start can be paralyzing. I think the best approach is the 2 trash bag and 3 piles approach. Grab 2 big trash bags and start taking every single thing out of that closet one shelf at a time. Your 3 piles will consist of things to 1) Keep 2) Donate 3) Trash. Then I usually start from the top shelf and work my way down. So looking at the before photo (left) above you would take down all those little hygiene supplies from hotels, random sheets, and towels. Then disperse among the 3 piles. Now, this is a staged messy closet… yours will likely be much worse. Depending on how long it has been since you last went through it, you will probably be throwing away or donating a majority of it’s contents.
What you will find vs. what you should have
Personally, when I recently went through mine, I had a ton of baby stuff, really old random mis-matched sheets, and old outdated or ripped towels. Now, my kids are past the baby stages at 4 & 6 years old but I still kept a lot of the bigger hooded towels and washcloths that matched our current decor. Everything else was put in the donate pile. I pieced the sheet sets together and if I had a complete set of flat, fitted, and 2 pillow cases I kept it. All incomplete sets and tacky colors from the 90’s were sent to the trash. Baby crib sheets were put in the donate pile but we did keep some blankets for dolls and play.
What you actually should have in your linen closet
If you’re looking to declutter and simplify, this is what I found worked best for organizing our little linen closet.
1. Sheet Sets- 2 Extra for each bed in the house
2. Bath Towels- 5 per person in the house
3. Blankets- Keep any handmade or keepsake blankets then keep 2 of your favorites that you actually use per person
4. Pillows- Keep enough for guests. I like to keep 4 total on hand- 2 for our air mattress and 1 for each couch.
5. Beach Towels- We live in Southern California so we keep a lot of towels on hand for ourselves and friends. I designated them to 2 Your Way Cubes by Thirty-One. 1 for boy towels and 1 for girl towels which is an easy organizing method in our home.
6. Misc- You might store guest toiletries, extra comforters, heating blankets, humidifiers, etc.
Solutions that will help you stay organized long term
Thirty-One offers a fabulous line of products to keep you organized in their Your Way Home Collection. I have found that using these organizational bins gives me not only function in the moment but a long term and easy to maintain system. Even the kids will be able to follow it!
First of all, my customers love our Brand New Your Way Display Bins! These are perfect for items you want to store away but still be able to see before you grab. It gives you the functionality of a large bin with easy access to use and see when you are running low on an item. These can be used all over the house. Also great for small businesses to set up shop on the go!
Next, everyone definitely needs a lot of these Your Way Cubes! They are the perfect size for storing towels and blankets. The window keeps it easy to replace in the same spots after doing the laundry. Or turn the bin around to conceal unfolded towels. haha! We offer a few different sizes in these if you might have a need to store washcloths or smaller items.
Another very useful set to have is the brand new Hostess Exclusive Storage Duo. These can be used well beyond just hiding in the linen closet but are especially great for storing those bigger items like bulky blankets, comforters, and extra pillows.
Lastly, these three items are perfect for storing all the other odds and ends in your closet. Mix and match or move them around your home and store as needed. I love the mini storage bin for extra loofas and candles. The Double Duty Caddy is great to use as a cleaning caddy! The little guy on the left is the Oh-Snap bin which is great for guests toiletries!
